5 Questions to Ask When Hiring Painters in NJ

Paint can quickly change the entire look of your home. Take your boring, builder-beige walls to bright and airy. Repaint your faded and outdated exterior a fresh and clean color to fit in with your neighbors.

Paint an accent wall to add a pop of color to your living room or bedroom. Not only is paint a quick way to change your home, it’s also relatively inexpensive. If you’re considering hiring painters in NJ, read on to learn what you should ask any company that you are considering.

1. Are You Licensed and Insured?

This should be one of the first questions you ask any painter that you are considering. Most legitimate companies will include their license number on their website or business card. You can then ask them if they are insured and even ask for proof.

Insurance is necessary because if they get hurt on the job, it will be their employer’s responsibility, not yours, to cover any medical expenses. Further, if they cause any damage to your home, their insurance will take care of and you won’t have to file a homeowner’s insurance claim.

2. What Type of Prep Work and Cleaning Will You Do?

Prep work often takes just as long as the painting. Ask potential painters what type of prep work they will do, such as filling holes, repairing walls, taping off door frames and trim, protecting your floors, furniture, and belongings, etc.

You’ll also want to know what kind of state they’ll leave your house in when they are done. Will they move furniture back to where it was originally placed? Will they take any tarps and other trash with them?

3. Do You Use Subcontractors?

If the painter you hire uses subcontractors, ask if they are properly trained and have adequate background checks. You may even opt to hire a painter who does not hire subcontractors and instead only uses painters that work for them directly.

4. Do You Provide a Warranty?

Most painting companies will guarantee their work for a certain period of time. Ask them if they provide a warrant if the paint chips, peels, or washes off. Any warranty should be in writing, typically on your estimate or your paid invoice.

5. What Materials Will You Be Using?

Using the best materials may result in a costlier paint job, but will ensure that the job is done right. Ask your painters what type of paint they use, whether they use rollers or will spray your walls, and what types of brushes they use.

Be sure to discuss paint finishes as well, as you don’t want to expect eggshell or satin finish and then find that they used flat paint on your entire home.

All of these questions can be answered during the initial consultation process, where you will discuss the scope of the job and what the painting company provides. A Point Painting & Remodeling provides an in-depth consultation where they can answer all of your questions.
