4 Things to Consider Before Beginning a Home Renovation

Have you been binge-watching HGTV lately?

You’re not alone! 2020 was a weird year for all of us, and now many people are ready to get started with a home renovation. (Especially after spending so much time there!)

There are a couple of things you need to consider before you get started:

1. What’s Your Budget?

First and foremost, you’ll need to determine your budget. This budget will determine the scope of your project, whether you can afford upgrading materials, and more.

You can also work backward from what you want to renovate to see how much money you’ll need to make your dream come to life. These projects may include:

  • Replacing your shower and bathtub
  • Removing a wall between your kitchen and dining room or living room
  • Turning a guest bedroom into a home office
  • Repairing or replacing your roof and/or siding
  • Finishing an unfinished basement

Of course, this list isn’t all-encompassing, but we hope it gives you some ideas when brainstorming the projects you want to do.

Once you have your budget and list of projects for your home makeover listed out, it’s time for the next part of the process.

2. How Much Time Do You Have?

Above all else, you need to really be realistic about how long your project is going to take. Whether you’re having a professional contractor come in or going the DIY route, how much time do you really have?

Take into account any major holidays and birthdays that you may be hosting, as well as the time of year. You don’t want to be without heat in the winter or be sweltering without a/c as you have the electricity turned off for an extended period in the summer.

You should also take into account how long you can stand the idea of your house being in a state of chaos, especially if you’re working from home. Some jobs can be done in a weekend, and others take months, so factor this in.

3. What’s Your Style?

This one may seem like a no-brainer, but do you know what your interior design style looks like?

Are you a minimalist or maximalist? Are you really into a clean Scandinavian style or would you rather your home have a cozy, rustic vibe?

One way to get an idea of your style is to use Pinterest or Instagram to search for what other people have done to decorate and renovate their homes that really resonates with you.

4. Should You Call a Professional?

So, you know your budget, your timeline, and your style, but have you decided if you’re going to DIY it or call in the pros?

You can probably handle painting a room or reupholstering a sofa or chair, but when it comes to major exterior repairs or anything to do with electrical or plumbing? Better to be safe than sorry. Reach out to a few contractors in your area that have great reviews!

Luckily, most contractors and companies specializing in home renovation, like Diligent Exterior Remodeling, will offer a free consultation. This will give you an opportunity to lay out your plans and also get a feel for whether you would like to work with this person or their team.
