Vitamins And Minerals For Pregnancy Support

Pregnancy is a beautiful journey for a mother and she wants to take every step that will help her baby to be healthy. From eating the right type of food in the right quantity, taking supplements on time, taking vaccines to doing prenatal yoga, she is always ready to do everything that is good for her little munchkin who is happily swimming inside the amniotic fluid. Multivitamins play a huge role in making your pregnancy journey healthy and happy. There are some vitamin and mineral sources that are required for both the mommy to be and the child inside her womb.

Here, we will be discussing about some of the majorly used vitamins and minerals that are super beneficial for pregnant ladies and their little bundle of joy:

Omega 3

Omega 3 capsules are the best source of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).  DHA is highly essential for  the brain development of the fetus and therefore you need to consume omega 3 capsule supplements during the second and third trimester of pregnancy.

The best time to consume these supplements is after breakfast. You can also add omega3 fatty acids to your diet in the form of foods like salmon, mackerel, etc. However, if you are allergic to fishes, then you can choose to have nuts, seeds, etc. Almonds and walnuts are also some of the best sources of DHA.

Iron

Low levels of iron in the body can lead to less hemoglobin levels that can cause anaemia in both mother and baby. Therefore, iron supplementation is a must during this pregnancy journey. Usually, iron supplements are started during the second trimester of pregnancy, which is around the end of 4th month or starting of 5th month.

The best time to take iron supplements is 1 hour before lunch time. Along with supplements you can also make sure to have enough of iron rich foods.

Calcium

Calcium is one of the most important minerals that is needed during pregnancy. The calcium supplements are usually started by the end of 3rd month of pregnancy or starting of 4th month. Both iron and calcium are necessary for pregnant women, but make sure you keep a considerable gap between both the supplements to get the best results. Calcium supplements and foods can help to strengthen the bones of your little ones as well as help your bones to sustain the beautiful and tough pregnancy period.

The best time to have calcium supplements is during night, before going to bed.  Also,  make sure not to consume calcium rich foods immediately after or just before consuming calcium supplements. You must have calcium rich foods (which is a must) but keep a considerable gap between consumption of supplements and foods.

Folic acid

Folic acid is another important vitamin source that is usually consumed in the first trimester. However, your doctor can continue folic acid supplement throughout the pregnancy or upto 5th month. This vitamin source can help to prevent neural tube deficiency in the fetus and also support healthy growth of your baby.  The best time to have this supplement is after breakfast.

Conclusion

Make sure to speak to your obstetrician before you start taking any of these micronutrients. Your doctor can prescribe you the exact dosage that is needed for your body and for your baby. We hope you have a safe pregnancy and give birth to a healthy smiling baby.
