America’s Most Popular Loaves

America's Most Popular Loaves

While many people choose to indulge in a low-carb diet, the fact is that most people eat bread. Thought to be a part of our diet for approximately 10,000 years, there are many different types of bread. Filling and relatively inexpensive, bread is a part of our diet as much as it was way back in the Neolithic period.

Let’s take a look at some of America’s most popular loaves so we can determine why they’re so popular.

Banana Bread

A recent surge in its popularity took place in the last year as many of us found ourselves spending more time at home. Banana bread is as tasty as it is moist and dense. Freshly baked loaves of banana bread are utterly divine.

Many people enjoy making banana bread at home as it’s not too hard to make. However, it’s also sold in almost every bakery and cafe across the country.  Made in the United States since the 18th century, some people have even begun to add zucchini in place of bananas.

Baguettes

You simply cannot enter any bakery without seeing many baguettes being made in or recently pulled out of a deck oven. Made with yeast, flour, water, and salt, baguettes are made by slashing the top of a long, thin portion of dough. Baguettes can be enjoyed with almost any meal, and they can be dunked in sauces and gravies, or covered with many different toppings or fillings.

Cornbread

Originally a part of the Native American diet, cornbread can be enjoyed as a savory or sweet dish. Baked in a skillet in the south of the United States, this type of bread is crumbly but it can be eaten with just about anything. However, this type of bread does not tend to store very well. This means that if you make some, you’ll have to eat it up quickly. This is not usually an issue as cornbread is very tasty and is best eaten when it’s fresh.

Challah

Challah is a type of bread that is an important part of the Jewish faith. First made in the middle ages, this type of bread is made with eggs and is usually braided. The poppy seeds that are sprinkled on the top of the loaf along with the sesame seeds have a lot of symbolism. Plaited to represent love, this loaf of bread is quite similar to brioche thanks to its spongy texture.

Wholewheat Bread

Wholewheat bread has become very popular in recent years. This is because it’s known to be very healthy thanks to the nutrients it contains. With more fiber, vitamins, and proteins than the traditional white loaf, wholewheat bread has a different texture and a lot more flavor than white bread.

There are many different types of bread available in this country. However, the above loaves are some of the most popular. Available in bakeries and baked in many homes, it’s no wonder that bread has and always will be an important part of our diet.
