Wallpaper, sponge paint, and borders are a thing of the past. Your house may look like it was last updated in the 80s with that kind of decor. And it likely hasn’t.

3. Faux Fireplaces
Back in the 70s and 80s, someone decided that fake features, like brick and stone, were better than what nature provides us. Have you looked under the fake bricks on your fireplaces?
There’s a possibility that the original fireplace structure with genuine rock or brick is underneath the fake material. You may be able to restore it. If not, give your fireplace a facelift with genuine wood, rock, or bricks.
4. Change the Light Fixtures
If you still have the same light fixtures that were installed when the house was built, you can create modern home decor by changing them. Get rid of the brass and fake gold features.
Many light features can modernize the look of your home. Consider bronze or graphite or stainless steel. You can even choose a variety of colors as accents.
5. Change Out Cabinet Hardware for a Low-Cost Update
If you don’t have a lot of room in your budget, look for an affordable update in cabinet hardware. Start by removing old pulls and hinges in your kitchens and bathrooms.
Spend a little money on chrome, pewter, or nickel hardware. Be consistent and use the same hardware throughout the house. It will make you feel like you’re in a whole new kitchen.
6. Organization and Minimalism
One thing that can make a home look old is having too much stuff. Create organization features like cupboards and furniture that doubles with storage. Choose accent pieces deliberately so that each piece you display draws the eye.
7. Remove Carpeting
Carpets make a house look old-fashioned and sometimes make a house smell old. Tear out carpets and replace them with hardwood or even a quality tile. Use throw rugs for a comfy feel.
8. Change the Furniture
