What to Do When You Have a Clogged Drain

by

There are many things you don’t want to let go down a drain. Cooking grease and even hair are just two of them. And while clogged drains are inconvenient, they can also be a health concern.

In some cases, a clogged shower drain could lead to structural issues. Sewage buildup can also house bacteria and other microbes, some of which could make you sick. So, what should you do if you have a clogged drain?

We have a few options for you that can help prevent blockages from doing damage to your home, as well as keep you and your family safe.

Here are a few solutions to consider if your drain is backing up.

Snake Your Drain

If your drain is clogged, you can try using a drain snake. First, insert the drain snake into the drain. Then rotate the snake clockwise and push it down into the drain. Make sure to twist it as you go.

Once you hit the clog, continue twisting and pushing the snake until you’ve dislodged the clog.

Use a Plunger

Start by removing any standing water from around the drain. This will make it easier to work with the plunger. You should then place the plunger directly over the drain. You may need to use a wet rag to help create a seal.

Once you have a good seal, use the plunger up and down vigorously. Be sure to keep the plunger tightly sealed over the drain so that you can create suction. You may need to do this for a minute or two before the clog starts to move.

If the water starts to drain, continue plunging until it is fully cleared. If the clog doesn’t seem to be budging, you may need to try a plunger with a different design.

Make a Baking Soda and Vinegar Solution

When you have a clogged drain, another thing you should do is make a baking soda and vinegar solution.

You just need to pour 1/2 cup of baking soda, then you can add 1/2 cup of vinegar down the drain.

Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes, then rinse the drain with hot water. If your drain is still clogged, you may need to repeat the process.

Use a Wire Hanger

When you have a clogged drain, one of the DIY tips you can do is use a wire hanger. Straighten out the wire hanger and then make a small hook at the end.

Insert the hook end into the drain and then try to fish out the clog. If this doesn’t work, you may need to call a plumber.

Call a Professional

When you have a clogged drain, you should consider contacting expert plumbers. They have the tools and experience to quickly and easily unclog your drain.

They will also be able to determine if the clog is caused by a simple blockage or if there is a more serious issue, such as a broken pipe. Calling a professional is also the best way to ensure that your clogged drain is fixed quickly and correctly.

Fix Your Clogged Drain Today

If you have a clogged drain, the first thing you should do is try to unclog it yourself. If you can’t unclog it, you should call a plumber. They have the equipment and the know-how to unclog even the most stubborn drains.

So, what are you looking for? Hire a professional to fix your clogged drain today!
