How to Pursue Your Dream of Becoming a Tattoo Artist

by

Around 36% of Americans have at least one tattoo, which highlights its popularity.

Becoming a tattoo artist lets you capitalize on your passion and build a business, so you are your own boss. But this is easier said than done, especially if you’re not sure how to start the process. Perhaps you’re struggling to get started, and you’re looking for advice on the topic.

Sounds familiar? Luckily, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s how to become a tattoo artist.

Practice Drawing

Before embarking on this career path, you must be an expert at drawing. Play around with a range of different techniques and methods, so you have a good understanding of the subject. You should also check out work from professionals as it will give you insight into becoming a tattoo artist.

Create a Portfolio

Once you’ve decided that it’s the perfect career choice, compile a portfolio of your work. Fill it with your favorite pieces and make sure it’s professional. For instance, slip your art into a binder with sheet protection to make your work easier to flip through.

And have confidence by adding your original work so potential mentors or employers can see your talent.

Get Educated

Although it’s not always necessary for becoming a tattoo artist, consider applying for art school. You can find affordable classes at a community college or work towards a degree in illustration. Another useful tip is learning graphic design to discover more about shape, texture, and shading.

Find a Mentor

Aside from getting a job, you must find a mentor who can introduce you to the world of tattooing. Start by visiting an array of tattoo parlors and ask whether they offer an apprenticeship. You could also reach out to potential mentors on social media to see if anyone is searching for an apprentice.

Note, that it’s possible to find a free mentorship at a tattoo parlor, but many charge between $5,000 to $10,000.

Learn and Practice Regularly

Regardless of whether or not you’ve secured a mentorship, familiarize yourself with the tattooing equipment and practice using it. You should also learn about hygiene before, during, and after to keep your clients safe. And while you do this, practice tattooing regularly to develop your skills.

Secure a License

Before starting your job search, you must be licensed. Make sure you check your state’s requirements and take necessary training in disease control and prevention. Note, that these are necessary for employment.

Find Clients

You can either work for a tattoo parlor or find your clients. To get started, create a professional social media account, upload your work, and target customers in your area. Also, gather funds for the buying equipment and a sterile environment for tattooing.

Become a Tattoo Artist

Now you’re ready to become a tattoo artist.

To get started, develop your drawing skills and create a portfolio of your best work. You should also find a mentor and secure a license so you can legally start your business. Good luck!
