The Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is a non-profit organization founded in 1972 that sets the minimum standard of excellence for automotive technicians. Individuals who have finished an automotive repair training program and passed examinations to guarantee they know how to operate on mechanical, electrical, and other automotive systems are certified by the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). You must pass an ASE test and have necessary hands-on work experience to become ASE certified.
The ASE organization provides the Automotive Service Excellence test to its customers who are looking for an automotive technician.
The ASE testing is divided into three certification levels with the highest level as master technician. The certification is conducted in three phases, first phase as a pretest or written test, second phase as a hands-on phase, and third phase as a lab examination, which consist of 100 questions.
- The first step to become an automotive technician is to apply for the certification exam through www.automotive-association.org , or they can be contacted by phone at 1 (800) 733-9227 and then follow up with email at [email protected] .
- The basic exam is composed of five online practice exams, each with one hundred questions. The first five exams are for the fundamentals of automotive theory and procedures, the second set of five is for interpretation and troubleshooting. Only after the completion of all the written exams will there be an opportunity to take the third phase which includes a lab portion in which 100 multiple-choice questions are given to you.
- After passing the written test and hands-on phase, you will then have to get your hands on an approved ASE certification technician training course that is approved by ASE itself. Make sure to take the ASE certification test within a year of completing your training.
ASE has set up a college/university credit program, giving students who take one of the ASE training courses toward a degree or certificate related to automotive service, the opportunity to receive college credits. The student will have to go through www.collegecreditconnections.org in order for them to be approved for college credits.
This is the first step for the student in order for them to become an ASE certified technician, however it is not enough because there are other aspects that must be met in order for you to become an ASE certified professional, one of which is “ASE Continuing Professional Education” (CPE).
How to be ASE certified?
The automotive industry is in need of trained and highly skilled technicians who are capable of servicing, repairing, installing, and maintaining a vehicle’s electronic systems. Automotive electronic systems require ongoing training to constantly stay proficient in the many aspects of this field. To be an ASE certified technician is to be a professional in ASE’s eyes who are knowledgeable and skilled enough to perform tasks that range from simply changing the oil or replacing brakes, to complex troubleshooting techniques.
To practice as an ASE technician you must pass the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification test and become a licensed automotive technician with your state’s department of motor vehicles. ASE credentialing tracks all ASE certifications, including most recently awarded certifications.
ASE Exam Passing Score
You must obtain a passing score on the ASE exam in order to pass. The passing score is determined by combining the multiple-choice and hands-on portion of the test. The test is composed of 100 multiple choice questions that must be answered correctly in order for you to pass. To further increase your chances of passing, remember to take all five online practice exams, then take the one in which you get the highest score. The passing score is 70%.
Multiple-choice Test-Taking Techniques
The ASE exam is designed to let you know where your weaknesses are, so you will want to take the multiple-choice test first and get used to the format of the multiple-choice questions so that when you move onto the hands-on portion of the exam, this test will be easier for you. Also, if your time allows you should prepare for both portions of the exam including writing down all answers to help yourself from making an error during question marking (QM) or rereading questions at a later time.
ASE Study Guide
In order to pass the exam, you must have the best study materials. The ASE Study Guide is used to familiarize you with the entire test and gives you a good idea of what to expect. You should find this study guide very helpful and not only that but it may also make you better prepared for your hands-on portion of the exam.
Candidates for ASE Certification must be at least 16 years old by December 31 of their certification year. There are no restrictions on where or how often a technician can take the test, however applicants must be in good physical health, not under 21 years of age, pass an eye examination as part of the application process and meet any other requirements outlined in the state laws governing automobile technicians.
